How It Works

  1. First, sit upright on the bed resting on a pillow, stretch your legs out straight, and turn your head 45 degrees to the left.

You can repeat these steps three consecutive times. With each movement you make, you may still feel dizzy, but you will soon be fine. Follow this procedure if the dizziness occurred from the left side, but if it is from the right side, follow the steps in the reverse direction.

This technique works better if someone is assisting you in taking the necessary steps correctly.

2. Brandt-Daroff Exercise

Brandt-Daroff exercise is straightforward and does not need supervision. Look for a safe space to perform the exercise. What’s more, make sure you won’t be driving the period you engage in this exercise, and that’s because it will make you dizzy for a while.

How It Works

  1. Sit on a flat surface and ensure your legs are dangling as if on a chair.
  2. Turn your head to the left side entirely, lay your head and torso down with the weight on your right side, ensure your legs are immobile and stay in that position for 30 seconds minimum.
  3. Sit up straight and turn your head to the center position.
  4. Repeat the exercise in the third step in a reverse manner

You can perform this exercise three times a day or twice a week.

3. Ginger Tea

Why it works

According to research published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science, ginger root is more effective for reducing dizziness than using techniques like the Epley Maneuver.

4. Hydration

“Genome mutation” is probably one of those words you’ve heard a total of three times (or less) in your life. You vaguely know it has something to do with biology but never really bothered to know more.

Good news! In this post, you’ll get to learn what these two words mean. More importantly, we’ll explore the concept of genome mutation in relation to COVID-19 and how it might be a good or bad thing in the fight to contain the virus and develop a cure or a vaccine for it.

What’s a Genome?

The technical definition of a genome is “the haploid set of chromosomes in a gamete or micro-organism, or in each cell of a multicellular organism”. To break that down, it simply means that every living organism- could be human beings, animals, lizards, or, in this case, a virus  (COVID-19), is made up of tiny units called cells, and these cells contain molecules that carry the structural information.

For humans, the genome is a collection of DNA, while in viruses, it is RNA. This RNA in viruses is reverse-studied by scientists to understand the nature of viruses.

How about Mutation?

Mutations are alterations in genetic materials- the genome in this case- that can alter the molecular structure of the organism and change its fundamental attributes. For viruses, mutations are a part of the evolutionary process, and it’s a way by which they survive in harsh environments, changing their features to align with prevalent conditions.

For example, you might know that seasonal flu currently has no known vaccine. The reason is that the flu virus evolves really fast (more than 50 times a year). Any vaccine developed for a current strain gets obsolete within 2 months or less, so there’s no point expending all the effort and resources meant for that.

How about the Coronavirus

Just like any other virus, the Coronavirus has a genome as well and has been shown by researchers to mutate too. Now to the main question, is genome mutation helpful with COVID-19? Well, there’s a yes and a no to this answer. 

Yes. And this is because COVID-19 has been discovered to not mutate as fast as the seasonal flu (less than 25 times a year). Also, keep in mind that the Coronavirus is twice as virulent as the seasonal flu virus.

When the size is factored in as well, the mutation speed becomes four times slower than that of the seasonal flu. This is helpful because any vaccine developed will be valid for a relatively longer time than those for the seasonal flu.

However, genome mutation presents a problem in treatment and outbreak containment. An example is how different symptoms continue to show up in relation to the virus. This makes it potentially difficult for healthcare providers to identify infected patients prior to testing and take appropriate isolation and decontamination procedures.

As scientists continue to track the virus’ evolution, we can only hope they find cures and vaccines that can keep up with the various mutations.

How long Do COVID-19 Antibodies Last? What are antibodies and what do they do in the human body?

Antibodies are an important part of how the body’s immune system fights off infections to keep us healthy. In the human body, antibodies are the equivalent of soldier ants in an ant colony. They identify strange elements (diseases) and stop them from causing harm to the body either by killing them or slowing down their reproduction.

Medicine and Antibodies

The discovery of antibodies was a great step forward for science. Rather than just wait for the antibodies to do their thing, medicine has taken a step forward by triggering them in the following ways:

1.Vaccination: Most vaccines work by triggering antibodies to put the body’s immune system on alert. The idea behind a vaccine is to introduce a small and innocuous amount of the disease we are trying to prevent into an individual’s body. When this happens, antibodies are triggered and produced, such that when an actual infection occurs, the immune system can fight it off.

The good thing about antibodies is that they last a very long time in the body system. It is why some immunizations/vaccines can be taken just once in a lifetime, and the person can be assured that any infection in the future will be taken care of;this is referred to as immunological memory.

2.Plasma Transfer: In a more direct approach, human plasma samples can be obtained from an individual who was able to recover from a viral infection (hence, their bodies must have secreted antibodies). The samples are then introduced into the bodies of patients currently battling the disease. This strengthens the patients’ immune systems and helps them fight off the virus.

Why hasn’t this worked for the Coronavirus?

True, the outlook is quite positive, and there’s a great deal of potential in using antibodies to fight viruses. However, it takes time to identify the exact antibodies and create appropriate vaccines to trigger them.

 Also, experts do say that the coronavirus mutates, howbeit not as fast as the seasonal flu. This also makes the search for a vaccine a little more complex as we have to be sure that any antibodies activated by a vaccine will not be unable to fight a new strain of the virus in the future.

An important advantage

While antibodies have not given us the much-desired vaccine yet, they have been useful in a very significant way which is antibody testing. The regular coronavirus tests can only show currently infected individuals and this can be misleading because some patients can be asymptomatic and recover before getting tested, leading to the incorrect assumption that they were never infected.

With antibody testing, however, it can be shown whether a person currently has or have had the virus at any time in the past by checking the antibodies that are present in the individual. A permanent solution can come in two ways. The first is developing a cure that is verifiable and can be proven to eliminate the virus from the body system while returning multiple negative tests. If this is achieved, treating the virus would be as simple as handling other illnesses such as the malaria parasite, typhoid fever and others.

While this option is workable and will at least help to get things back to normal pretty fast, it may not be the best on the table. Researchers are still not sure as to if the Coronavirus can re-infect a previously cured individual.

So, can a recuperated COVID-19 patient get reinfected? If this is the case, a cure will fix people up but not protect them from a recurrence of the disease. That means that the world’s population would still be vulnerable to resurgences of the virus. That said, a cure would be very much welcome at the moment.

The most desirable permanent solution to the virus would be the creation of a vaccine. With a vaccine, everyone can be assured of immunity against the virus. A vaccine would be the ultimate conclusion to the disruption caused by the pandemic. However, the results have not been tested for now on a large enough population sample to qualify as official cures for COVID-19. Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine became particularly popular when US President, Donald Trump, touted it as a useful cure. The WHO has, however, warned that there is the possibility of fatal side effects.

Vaccines: Ideally, vaccines take years to even get to the testing stage due to the high level of safety and quality that is required. Fortunately, we are not starting from zero per se. The SARS epidemic back in 2002 (which is a variation of the Coronavirus) prompted the creation of a vaccine by researchers, but it was kept when the virus subsided.

  2. Scarring can occur, leading to long term damage: When treated properly, and in the absence of severe underlying conditions, patients can recover from lung damage caused by COVID-19. In some cases, however, the effects sometimes extend beyond recovery. Scarring occurs when the damaged lung tissues are replaced with thick and stiff scar tissue which leads to shortness of breath during normal physical activities.

Asymptomatic people can get lung damage from COVID: Unfortunately, carriers of the Coronavirus disease who do not appear ‘sick’ but have gotten infected by the virus are also susceptible to lung damage. This means without coughing or having difficulty in breathing it is still possible to have the lungs getting slowly damaged by COVID-19. Scary right?

At first glance, it might make no sense to institute a total lockdown in cities or countries. On paper, it seems the best bet in restricting movement and nipping the spread of the virus in the bud. The reality, however, presents a far different picture.

Economic Strength: Countries like the UK and Germany amongst others were able to boost the economy with funds to provide welfare, such as feeding and other services for individuals stuck at home and unable to work.

For other countries without such welfare systems, the lockdowns were mostly breached as people had to seek a means of survival without government support.

Health Systems: In the absence of a working healthcare system, a lockdown won’t change much as facilities will not be sufficient to provide adequate care to infected patients.

Selective Lockdowns to the Rescue

Apart from disadvantaged countries, selective lockdowns have become imperative even in the world’s biggest economy because the costs of a lockdown- both financially and otherwise- are quite massive. So how does this work?

Below are some selective lockdown models:

Zoning: This system classifies a country into zones (geographical locations) based on the infection rates. The areas with the worst infection rates are put on total lockdown, while less affected areas are allowed to operate under strict safety guidelines.

Travel restrictions will also be in place to prevent the virus from being carried to uninfected areas from danger zones.

Demography: The most vulnerable individuals in a population are the aged and those with underlying medical conditions. This selective lockdown model calls for keeping such individuals quarantined, while other healthy people who constitute the bulk of the workforce can go to work and get the economy running again.

A lot of critics believe this model is inefficient as the active part of the population might spread infection and infect the people in quarantine.

Technology Monitoring: In countries like South Korea and others, technology is used to monitor the spread of the virus through ankle bracelets and other devices. Mobile apps are used to notify people when they come in contact with infected individuals or are approaching areas with high infection levels.

Online Learning: As optimistic as we may want to be, the truth is that the virus is not likely going away anytime soon. Even worse, researchers have warned of the possibility of periodic resurgences of the virus on the scale of spread that we have recently experienced. What does this mean?

Even if we’re able to reopen schools soon, there is no assurance that there won’t be a need to close them down again at some point in the future, if another outbreak occurs.
